[ครบชุด] T0310042 องเช าไร ำใจ Ep.2

When looking at technology that can eventually trickle down to reasonably priced road cars, there are two main avenues to keep an eye on. The first is racing, where manufacturers develop a range of new technology that eventually finds itself in its production offerings, and the other is via supercars. All the freshest and best tech gets lavished on them, and it tends to get passed down once it matures and gets more reliable and affordable. Ground-effects aero is increasingly being researched by companies such as Hyundai to lower EVs’ drag, while Aston Martin employs it in its exclusive hypercars, like the Valhalla, and Gordon Murray has been dabbling with it for years in his F1 fan cars and now in the GMA T.50. This is just one example of active aero being employed in modern cars.

Active aero is a great example of this, with the tech being developed on more expensive vehicles before spreading around to humbler automobiles. The main benefit of it is that it can improve grip and stability at higher speeds, but then move to a position that reduces drag when needed. A Danish supercar brand took the tech to another stratosphere, so CarBuzz decided to shine a light on it.

This piece explores the Zenvo TSR-S, a supercar that featured one of the most elaborate active aerodynamic features of any road car ever produced. All technical data was sourced from trusted providers, such as the vehicle manufacturer.

The TSR-S Is A Further Evolution Of An Establishment-Challenging Supercar

The late 1990s and early 2000s saw the rise of smaller supercar makers that looked to take the fight to more established names, such as Ferrari and Lamborghini. These included Pagani, Swedish brand Koenigsegg and, in 2007, Zenvo. The Danish marque exploded onto the scene with its ST1, an imposing weapon that came with a twin-charged version of the 7.0-liter LS7 V8 from a Corvette Z06. Making nearly 1,100 hp showed how serious the brand was, and it followed up with the TS1 in 2016.N/A

Zenvo’s all-new Aurora is gunning for hypercar royalty.

Sold alongside the TS1 was the TSR, a non-road-legal track-day car that was essentially a stripped-out version of the TS1. It also had a large carbon-fiber rear wing. Feeling a road-legal version of the TSR would make sense, Zenvo set about upgrading it from a performance aspect, as well as ensuring it could be road-legal.

The TSR-S Filled A Gap In Zenvo’s Product Line

The TSR-S slotted in above the more GT-style TS1 and below the fully track-focused TSR in the marque’s range, and came with the option of luxuries such as climate control and an audio system, unlike the TSR. In some ways though, the slightly softer TSR-S was technically superior to the TSR.

Discussion

In your opinion, what is the greatest car-building nation of all time?

You could make a strong case for the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and many others here. But I’m going to throw all logic out of the window and go with Italy, which has consistently produced some of the world’s most emotive machines on four wheels. From the Ferrari F40 to today’s Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and even something as cheap as the Fiat 500, Italian cars are always interesting in some way. At their best, they’re more beautiful and more intoxicating to drive than anything else. At their worst… well, let’s not go there. Italy has given us icons like the Lamborghini Miura, Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, and Ferrari 250 GTO. Which nation do you think goes down as the greatest car-building nation ever, as things stand now?

Zenvo Developed A Wild Active Aero Rear Wing

Wanting to ensure the TSR-S could be as quick as possible, Zenvo went hard on developing a hardcore aerodynamic package for it to maximize downforce. The headlining feature was the large rear wing, which could tilt left, right, forward, and backward to vary the amount of air hitting the main wing panel, and at what angle. This means that the downforce produced by the vehicle is optimized no matter the speed of the car and what direction it’s turning.

2019 Zenvo TSR-S Specifications
Engine5.8L twin-supercharged V8
Power1,177 hp
Torque885 lb-ft
0-60 mph2.8 seconds
Top Speed202 mph (limited)
Downforce595 pounds

When the car is driving in a straight line, the wing will remain flat like on a normal car, and it can tilt forward under braking to act as a speed brake. When turning, the wing will tilt away from the inner wheel, which allows the downforce to push that wheel harder into the road. This creates an inward force that pushes the car toward the apex, allowing it to carry greater corner speed. This centripetal force also enhances rear grip, making the back end less likely to break away under heavy cornering.N/A

And your choice of rear- or all-wheel drive.

As the outer wheel is already forced into the road due to the weight of the car shifting to that side when turning, the wing helps even out the grip level of both tires. Aside from being extremely effective from a performance standpoint, the rotating wing is also a sight to behold in action, and immeasurably adds to the drama of the car.

The TSR-S Also Enjoys Other Aero Enhancements

While the rear wing is the only example of active aero featured on the TSR-S, this doesn’t mean Zenvo neglected the rest of the aero setup. A more aggressive front splitter helped to increase downforce at the front of the car, while the front wheel housing outlets are designed to extract air from the underbody, which helps reduce drag and downforce in equal measure. The TSR-S also gets an updated rear diffuser along with the crazy wing, while a racing-inspired roof-mounted air scoop supplies the powerplant with air.

The TSR-S’ Mechanical Foundations Were Also Beefed Up

While the TSR-S utilizes the same 5.8-liter twin-supercharged V8 – developed off a GM V8 – as used in the TS1, it is upgraded to produce 1,177 hp. The powerplant is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch paddle-shift transmission, which comes with two settings. The unusual gearbox comes with helical-cut dog gears and full electronic control, as well as mechanical shifting.N/A

We finally get to see the Danish supercar’s unique ‘Centripetal’ wing in action.

When in road mode, the gearbox uses electronic shifting, which tunes out the harshness of the race-inspired sequential transmission. When in race mode, the mechanical function takes over, which is harsher but allows for faster gear changes.

The TSR-S Is Designed To Be Balanced

Alongside the powertrain, Zenvo’s engineers also worked hard on the TSR-S’ underpinnings. By placing the engine in the middle, the TSR-S has a weight distribution of 44%/56%, while the fully adjustable double-wishbone independent suspension setup ensures it can deal with all the downforce thrown at it. The anti-roll bars are also fully adjustable, allowing the chassis stiffness to be altered on the fly. To ensure the TSR-S can stop as well as it corners, it also comes with a six-piston braking setup with carbon ceramic discs all round. Most of the body panels are also made from carbon fiber to help keep weight down.

Zenvo went all out on every aspect of the TSR-S to ensure it was a true track beast that could be driven home at the end of the day. For those looking to shatter your G-meter every time you head to the office, and fancy a hardcore track day every now and again, then look no further than this zany Danish supercar.

Adaptive Aero And Active Rear Wings Have Been Around For A While

An active rear wing isn’t exactly new technology, with the setup first being utilized on production cars way back in 1986. The Lancia Thema 8.32, a four-door sedan equipped with a 2.9-liter Ferrari V8, was graced with a rear wing that emerged from the trunk lid at high speed to help aid stability. At lower speeds, the spoiler would retract to help reduce drag and increase the vehicles’ efficiency. To illustrate our point of how this kind of tech trickles down to regular cars, the humble Volkswagen Corrado – a Golf 2-based mainstream coupe – already had an automatically deploying rear spoiler by 1988.porsche 959 front

In the same year as the Thema 8.32 came out, the Porsche 959 supercar also played around with ways to enhance the vehicles’ pace at high speed. The advanced 959 came with an automatic ride-height adjustment, which could lower it in motion to help reduce drag. This allowed it to cut through the air more cleanly and gather speed quicker, as well as reach a higher top speed – 198 mph to be exact – than most of its rivals.

Nowadays, active aero is being used by many brands, such as Hyundai, to help improve the efficiency of electric vehicles, as well as on performance cars to help enhance their high-speed balance. While the practical benefits are unquestionably useful, it’s arguably just as cool to see the aero surfaces jamming like a rockstar at a gig.
